# Pi

[Pi](https://pi.dev/) is a minimal terminal coding harness from Earendil Inc. The [`@youdotcom-oss/pi`](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@youdotcom-oss/pi) package registers five You.com skills and bridges You.com MCP tools into Pi for web search, page content, research, finance, and docs lookup. They're the same skills the Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex plugins install.

## Quick Setup

## Install the You.com Package

```bash
pi install npm:@youdotcom-oss/pi
```

The package includes the `you-web`, `you-research`, `you-finance`, `you-discover`, and `you-free` skills, keyless `you-search`, authenticated You.com MCP tools for page content, research, and finance, and the You.com Docs MCP tools.

To install only the skills, without the bridged MCP tools, use the Agent Skills installer from your project root:

## Set Your API Key

Keyless `you-search` and the Docs MCP tools work without a key. The authenticated tools read `YDC_API_KEY`. Set it before launching Pi:

## Start Pi

Inside a Pi session:

Pi activates the relevant skill automatically when a task involves search or page extraction.

## Keyless Tier

Want to try it without signing up? The free profile runs `you-search` and `you-discover` (100 queries/day, no auth) when no API key is set—leave `YDC_API_KEY` unexported and Pi will fall back to the keyless endpoint. Page extraction and deep research require a key, and research/finance need the matching MCP path or allowlist.

## Troubleshooting

#### pi: command not found

Install Pi from [pi.dev](https://pi.dev/docs/latest) and confirm with `pi --version`.

#### Skill doesn't activate

Confirm the package installed with `pi install npm:@youdotcom-oss/pi`, then restart Pi. If you used `npx skills add`, confirm the skill files are in your project. See [pi.dev/docs/latest](https://pi.dev/docs/latest) for Pi's skill-discovery rules.

#### 401 errors

Confirm `YDC_API_KEY` is exported in the shell that launched Pi, not just in a sub-shell, and starts with `YDC-`.

#### Hit the keyless rate limit

Set `YDC_API_KEY` to lift the cap and unlock `you-contents`. `you-research` and `you-finance` need an explicit allowlist or the dedicated MCP paths.
