Tavily vs Perplexity API for AI Agents: Results, Answers, and Credit Models

TLDR: Tavily and Perplexity overlap less than their category suggests. Tavily returns relevance-scored chunks, bills in credits, and can add a short answer to the same call. Perplexity's Search API returns ranked results at $5.00 per 1,000 requests, or $1.00 with Fast Search, while its Agent API writes cited answers billed by tokens and tool calls. Choose Tavily for scored chunks and large domain lists. Choose Perplexity for cheap raw results or an agent that writes the answer.
Teams shopping for a search API for AI agents land on both names, and the marketing makes them sound interchangeable. They differ in what a call returns, what a unit of billing means, and how each one signals that the money has run out. Every figure below comes from vendor documentation, accurate as of October 2026, and is linked where it is used. Prices change, so re-check the linked page before you commit.
What Does Each API Return?
Tavily's search endpoint is POST https://api.tavily.com/search. Each entry in results carries a title, a URL, a relevance score, and a content field made of up to three query-relevant chunks, about 500 characters each at basic and fast depth and 800 at advanced. The ultra-fast depth returns one NLP summary per URL instead. Optional flags add an LLM-written answer, the page's raw_content as markdown or text, and a published_date, which Tavily labels a beta best estimate that can be later than the original publication date.
Perplexity's Search API is POST https://api.perplexity.ai/search. Each result carries a title, a URL, a snippet of content extracted from the page, and optional date and last_updated fields. No relevance score is documented. Instead, max_tokens and max_tokens_per_page, each up to 1,000,000, budget how much page content comes back. For a written answer you leave this API: Perplexity's own guidance is to use the Search API for raw results and the Agent API for an answer with citations.
| Tavily Search | Perplexity Search API | |
|---|---|---|
| Result fields | Title, URL, content chunks, score. Optional raw content, published date (beta), images | Title, URL, snippet. Optional date and last updated |
| Relevance score | Yes, per result | Not documented |
| Content size control | chunks_per_source from 1 to 3, plus include_raw_content | max_tokens and max_tokens_per_page |
| Results per request | Up to 20 (default 10) | Up to 20 (default 10) |
| Queries per request | One | Up to five |
| Domain filters | include_domains up to 300, exclude_domains up to 150, optional prefer mode | search_domain_filter up to 20, allowlist or denylist but not both |
| Answer in the same call | include_answer, basic or advanced | No. Use the Agent API |
The chunk-versus-record contrast is narrower than the marketing implies, because both return query-relevant page text. What differs is who sizes it (a chunk count versus a token budget) and whether you get a score to threshold on. Dates are optional in both, so measure how often your queries come back undated before you build recency logic on either.
How Do the Billing Models Differ?
| Tavily | Perplexity Search API | Perplexity Agent API | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit | Credit | Successful request | Tokens plus tool invocations |
| Price | $0.008 per credit pay-as-you-go, $0.0075 to $0.005 per credit on monthly plans | $5.00 per 1,000 requests, $1.00 with search_type set to fast | Model token rates, plus $0.0025 per standard web_search and $0.001 per fast one |
| What changes the price | advanced depth costs 2 credits. basic, fast, and ultra-fast cost 1 | Search type only. Up to five queries in one request are one billing unit | Model choice, token counts, and the tools the agent calls |
Sources: Tavily's credits page and Perplexity's pricing page. Tavily also offers 1,000 free credits a month with no credit card, and its monthly plans run from Project at $30 for 4,000 credits to Growth at $500 for 100,000. Our SerpApi vs Tavily comparison has the full plan table.
Two details move the bill more than the headline rates. Tavily's cheaper depths do not exist: fast and ultra-fast cost the same credit as basic, and only advanced doubles the price. Perplexity's Fast Search is the only discounted latency tier of the two, at one fifth of the standard rate, and Perplexity recommends it for day-to-day agent work and standard search for rare, difficult, or ambiguous questions. On the other side, Perplexity bills a successful response even when it returns no results, while invalid, rate-limited, and upstream-failed requests are not billed. Tavily's auto_parameters flag can switch a request to advanced depth on its own, which costs 2 credits, and Tavily's docs say to set search_depth to basic explicitly to avoid that.
The script below prices a workload of single-query searches. A Tavily plan's price includes credits you may not use, so it adds pay-as-you-go overflow at $0.008 per credit, which Tavily documents as the rate once a plan's credit limit is reached.

At 50,000 basic searches a month, the cheapest Tavily combination is the Startup plan plus overflow at $316.00. Pay-as-you-go alone costs $392.00 after the free 1,000 credits, and Growth costs $500.00 because you pay for the whole 100,000-credit bundle. Perplexity costs $250.00 at standard search and $50.00 with Fast Search. If 20 percent of the Tavily searches use advanced depth, the cheapest Tavily total rises to $396.00. Batching five related queries per Perplexity request also drops standard search to $50.00, but the rate limiter counts all five (see below), and a batch only fits agents that already issue related sub-queries together.
Answer generation is where the meters diverge most. Tavily's credits page ties search cost to depth and lists no separate charge for include_answer, so a short answer rides on the search credit. Its Research endpoint is metered dynamically at 4 to 110 credits per request on the mini model and 15 to 250 on pro. Perplexity's Agent API charges tokens at the chosen model's rate plus tool fees, and its own cost example prices one call with a single web search at $0.0059: $0.0034 in model tokens plus $0.0025 for the search.
What Do Rate Limits and Failure Signals Look Like?
| Tavily | Perplexity | |
|---|---|---|
| Throughput | 100 requests per minute on development keys, 1,000 on production keys. Production keys need a paid plan or pay-as-you-go | Search API: 50 query units per second with a burst of 50, independent of usage tier. Agent API: 1 to 33 queries per second by tier |
| Rate limited | 429 with Retry-After | 429, from a leaky-bucket limiter |
| Out of money | 432 for a key or plan limit, 433 for the pay-as-you-go limit | 401, the same code as an invalid key |
| Billing unit versus rate unit | Credits by depth, rate limited by request | One five-query request is one billing unit and five rate-limit units |
Sources: Tavily's rate limits page and search reference, and Perplexity's rate limits page and FAQ.
The out-of-money row is the one to design for. Standard retry logic backs off on 429 and gives up on other 4xx codes, which is the right behavior for 432 and 433, but your alerting must treat them as billing events, not bugs. Tavily credits reset on the first day of each month regardless of billing date, pay-as-you-go lets usage continue past a plan's credit limit, and the pay-as-you-go cap has its own error, 433, with the fix on the Tavily dashboard. Perplexity's 401 is harder, because on the wire it looks like a bad key, and its FAQ says the code also means the account ran out of credits. Check the balance before you rotate keys, and enable auto top-up, which Perplexity recommends to avoid interrupted service.
The last row is a throughput trap. Perplexity's multi-query batching cuts the bill, but the limiter charges one unit per query, so 50 units per second is at most ten five-query requests per second. Size your worker pool on units, not requests.
Which API Fits a RAG Pipeline?
Four differences decide it, and none of them is quality, which only your own queries can settle.
- Context packing. Tavily's three-chunk results with a score let you drop low-scoring sources and predict the context size. Perplexity's token budgets cap size in the unit your model charges for, but you get no score, so rank order is the main signal you have.
- Domain policy. If an allowlist of a few hundred trusted domains is a requirement, Tavily's 300 included and 150 excluded domains fit, and its prefer mode keeps the rest of the web in play. Perplexity's list stops at 20 domains and cannot mix allow and deny in one request.
- Query fan-out. Agents that expand one question into several sub-queries get a cost advantage from Perplexity's batching and a throughput limit from its unit accounting.
- Freshness. Both date fields are optional. Tavily's
filter_by_published_dateremoves undated results along with out-of-window ones, so decide whether losing undated sources is acceptable.
Our RAG with web search guide covers the pipeline around the retrieval call.
Which API Fits Answer Generation?
Tavily's include_answer returns an LLM-generated answer in the same response, quick or detailed, which suits a one-line take beside the results. Perplexity's route is the Agent API: a model you pick from several providers, with web search and URL fetching as tools, returning a prose answer with citations.
Check Perplexity's status notes before you plan around Sonar. Its migration page says Sonar Chat Completions support ended on September 27, 2026. Synchronous and streaming Sonar requests keep working while they are reformulated as Agent API requests, rolling out gradually by model, and asynchronous Sonar requests are no longer supported and should move to background mode. Perplexity recommends the Agent API for all new projects. Our Perplexity API alternatives guide covers the migration and the options beyond it.
If the job is one call that returns a cited answer, You.com has the same split. The Answer API is $5.00 per 1,000 calls, and the Research API is tiered from $12 per 1,000 calls at lite to $1,200 at frontier, per the billing page. See our AI answer API guide and the Research API docs.
What Should You Test Before You Choose?
- Replay 50 real queries at each depth or search type, and log the result count, the newest date, and for Tavily the score distribution. Check whether results above a score threshold contain the answer.
- Run your 10 hardest queries through both of Perplexity's search types, since Perplexity itself reserves standard search for difficult or ambiguous questions.
- Send a Perplexity request that returns nothing, such as an over-filtered domain list, and confirm it appears in your usage as billed. Set Tavily's
include_usageflag and logusage.creditsper request to catch a silent upgrade toadvanced. - Mock 432, 433, 401, and 429 and assert that your client stops and alerts on the first three and backs off on the last.
- Fire a burst equal to your peak sub-query fan-out and watch the 429 rate.
One SDK note from Perplexity's Fast Search page: on Python library versions 0.43.4 and 0.43.5, passing search_type="fast" directly fails request validation, and the documented workaround is extra_body={"search_type": "fast"}. Pin your version and test the call before you rely on the cheaper tier.
Where Does the You.com Web Search API Fit?
The You.com Web Search API is a results API like Tavily's and Perplexity's. It is POST https://ydc-index.io/v1/search with an X-API-Key header, priced at $5.00 per 1,000 calls with up to 100 results per call, and it takes include_domains up to 500 domains and exclude_domains up to 5,000. Self-serve accounts default to 10 requests per second, and higher limits come with a custom plan. Perplexity's 50 units per second and Tavily's 1,000 requests per minute on production keys are both higher than that default, so confirm your peak before you assume it fits. Our You.com Web Search API guide covers the endpoint, pricing, and limits, and it belongs in the same test as the other two.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Tavily gives 1,000 free credits a month with no credit card, per its credits page. A basic search costs 1 credit and an advanced search costs 2, so the free tier covers 1,000 basic searches or 500 advanced ones. Credits reset on the first day of each month, and production keys require a paid plan or pay-as-you-go.
Partly. Perplexity says Sonar Chat Completions support ended on September 27, 2026. Synchronous and streaming requests keep working while they are reformulated as Agent API requests, rolling out gradually by model, but asynchronous Sonar requests are no longer supported. Perplexity recommends the Agent API for all new projects.
For raw results, Perplexity is cheaper at list price. It charges $5.00 per 1,000 requests, or $1.00 with Fast Search, while Tavily charges $0.008 to $0.005 per credit and one credit per basic search. At 50,000 searches a month that is $250 or $50 against $316 at best for Tavily. Model your own mix, because plan bundles and batching change the result.
Tavily returns 432 when a key or plan limit is exceeded and 433 when the pay-as-you-go limit is exceeded. Perplexity returns 401, the same code as an invalid key, and its FAQ says the account may have run out of credits. Treat all three as billing events: stop retrying, alert, and top up, and back off only on 429.
Compare four differences: context packing, domain policy, query fan-out, and freshness. Tavily gives relevance-scored chunks and domain lists of 300 included and 150 excluded. Perplexity gives token budgets, five queries per request, and a 20-domain filter. Quality is not in the docs, so replay 50 of your real queries through both and compare.
