Add You.com to Pi (Earendil)

Pi is a minimal terminal coding harness from Earendil Inc. The @youdotcom-oss/pi package registers four You.com skills and connects six You.com MCP servers through Pi’s built-in MCP support for web search, page content, research, finance, and docs lookup. They’re the same skills the Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex plugins install.

Install the Docs MCP server

The Docs MCP server lets your agent search over the entirety of these docs. Free to use.

Quick Setup

Install the You.com Package

pi install npm:@youdotcom-oss/pi

The package requires Pi 0.99.1 or later. It includes the you-web, you-research, you-finance, and you-discover skills and registers these MCP servers:

Pi names each tool mcp__<server>__<tool>, such as mcp__you__you-search. Manage the servers with /mcp, or override one by adding an entry with the same name to Pi’s mcp.json.

To install only the skills, without the MCP servers, use the Agent Skills installer from your project root:

npx skills add youdotcom-oss/agent-skills

Set Your API Key

The you-free, you-discover, and you-docs servers work without a key. The other three send YDC_API_KEY as a bearer token when it’s set at launch:

Get a key at you.com/platform. To sign in over OAuth instead, run /mcp login you inside Pi.

Inside a Pi session:

Search the web for the latest TypeScript 5.5 release notes and summarize the breaking changes.

Pi activates the relevant skill automatically when a task involves search or page extraction.

Keyless Tier

With no API key or sign-in, the you-free server runs you-search (100 queries per day) and the you-discover server runs integration discovery. The you-web skill switches to the free server on its own. Page extraction, research, and finance need a key or OAuth.

Troubleshooting

pi: command not found

Install Pi from pi.dev and confirm with pi --version.

Skill doesn't activate

Confirm the package installed with pi install npm:@youdotcom-oss/pi, then restart Pi. If you used npx skills add, confirm the skill files are in your project. See pi.dev/docs/latest for Pi’s skill-discovery rules.

401 errors

Confirm YDC_API_KEY is exported in the shell that launched Pi, not just in a sub-shell, and starts with YDC-. Pi reads the key once at load, so run /reload after changing it.

Hit the keyless rate limit

Set YDC_API_KEY and run /reload, or sign in with /mcp login you. The keyed servers lift the cap and add you-contents, you-research, and you-finance.
